tasks are so-called AMP Worker Tasks (AWT), the "worker bees" of Teradata.
Each step in Explain will require one or more AWTs to do the work, the number depends on the type of step.
There is an excellent Orange Book from Carrie Ballinger on AWTs and you'll find some blogs from Carrie on this topic, e.g.
